This family-friendly walk gives information on 50 native birds. The bird portraits were created and sketched by 10 - 12 year old children from the municipality. They are located in spots where, with a bit of luck, these birds can be observed. The educational bird trail leads partly through the village, partly through meadows and woods, and past the stream, so that you can find birds for every landscape. The path is signposted with bird silhouettes, their beaks show you the way.

    Turn-by-turn directions

The bird trail starts at Café Müller opposite the church. 50 m below the café, walk between two houses onto a path, which you follow to the end. Then turn left and follow the road to the second crossroads, where you turn right. Here you will be accompanied by many beech hedges. The first road to the right leads you out of the village and to the edge of the forest, where you turn left. Follow this forest path until you reach a rest area (a barrel has been converted into a seating area). There you turn left again and head towards the village of Hepscheid.

At the first road on the right, you have the option of extending the tour by 4 km. This route is marked V+ and leads through an enchanting landscape; however, you absolutely need proper hiking shoes here.

The V+ extension rejoins the bird trail a few metres further on, at the chapel, which leads out of the village and crosses the main road. After 200 m, turn left onto a field path and reach Heppenbach again. You follow the road until you reach the main road, where you stick to the right. After 150 m, turn right again and walk around the church to get back to the starting point.
