Description
Formerly, gold deposits gave the river its charm. Today it's the landscapes.
At Montenau, the Amel disappears into the so-called Wolfsbusch, a fir and beech wood which extends out beyond the borders of East Belgium and reminds us that wolves were still at home in the Ardennes right on into the 19th century. Protected by the treetops, we reach the river, which carves its way through the Ardennes massif. Seen from above, the banks of the Amel communicate an almost perfect image of silence and serenity.
Via a timber bridge and some planking the route leads to Thirimont, a hamlet in the middle of a green oasis. Again we cross a bridge and discover traces of former gold-digging activities and long buried dreams of getting rich over night. In the silence you can hear the murmur of the Amel. The call of a cuckoo rings out in the distance. Two buzzards circle overhead. In Montenau nature leaves nothing to be desired.

Advice
The Montenau ham smoking facility is organised in such a way that you can watch original Ardennes ham being made live from A to Z. On weekdays you can watch the men and women at work through large glass windows.
