Shortly after the dam, the panoramic hiking trail begins. At Napoleon's Nose ('Nez de Napoléon') your gaze drops dizzily, deep into the valley. On a track, sometimes steeply uphill and sometimes steeply down, you continue southward. After the conifers, the leafy tops of the oaks afford some shade.
We turn off to the right at the crossroads and walk along the slope as far as the Warche. It's almost moving how untouched this river landscape seems. Going upstream, the valley gradually narrows, until Burg Reinhardstein comes into view: quite the perfect model of a fairy-tale castle. From a platform, we take a last look at the wilderness in the valley, above which the castle rises majestically.
