You start out at the Marktplatz (market square) in Bütgenbach and head downwards to the Bütgenbach reservoir dam, before continuing to the villages Berg and Elsenborn. There, several trails lead you along the military training ground and to the forest “Nidrumer Heck”. You use further trails to reach a place named “Knochenmühle” and then pass the “Weywertzer Heck” to continue on forest paths until you get to the “Schwarzer Hügel” (black hill). The name of this hill is a reference to the dark storm clouds that gather in this area in summer to announce coming thunderstorms. Once on top of the hill, you keep taking small, slightly downhill trails and end up at the Wallbrücke. From this bridge, the tour leads you on a tough ascent to the Brückberg, followed by a short downhill ride. Just as you enjoy the descent, you already see the next steep slope up to the village Nidrum and the so-called “paradise”, where a critical section awaits you. If you aren’t trained in technical rides, you should dismount here and push your bike. Thereafter, you follow the Warche in the direction of “Am großen Feld” (at the large field) and finally ride back to Bütgenbach.
Author’s recommendation
These trails are most enjoyable in dry weather.
Those who want to extend the tour can easily combine it with the tour “Bütgenbacher Heck - Wald und Wiesen”.
In summer, you might want to enjoy a refreshing jump into the lake at Venntastic Beach.
