The village of Hergenrath was first mentioned in official documents in 1280 by the name of Heyenrodt. At that time, the aristocratic families 'von Eyneberg' and 'von Hergenrath' lived in the area. The former resided in the Eyneburg, built high up above the Göhl.
The landscape around Hergenrath is characterised not only by the mediaeval castle but also by the valley of the Göhl with its precipitous rock formations. Nature and Man have created an idyllically romantic belt of land here.
The station at Hergenrath, just five minutes away from the entrance to the wood, enables guests to begin their walk as soon as they get off the train, right in the middle of Nature.
Integrated in the landscape and along the hiking trails there's plenty to discover: old mills, houses from as early as the 15th century, wayside crosses (16th century), the Hammer Bridge (1841 – rebuilt in 1999), lime kilns (1911), ...
