Around the enticing Warche reservoir which acts as a magnet for those in search of recreation, there's a diverse countryside, an abundance of activities and excellent accommodation.
The Warche reservoir, spanning an area of around 120 hectares (300 acres) (Bütgenbach Lake), is the centre of a typical Eifel-Ardennes landscape, surrounded by untouched nature, extensive forests, vast, green stretches of land, beautiful hedgerow landscapes and conservation areas worth preserving. In the middle is Worriken Sports Centre with its diverse range of recreational activities in the municipality of Bütgenbach – from a holiday village and campsite to a wide range of sports and water sports as well as a climbing garden, VennTastic Beach (8,000 m2 bathing beach), a bathing area of 2,000 m² attended by lifeguards through to an island for sunbathing, trampoline (7 m) and a climbing iceberg (5 m).
Unique recreation areas invite visitors to enjoy nature at close quarters in the municipality of Bütgenbach. For instance, in the valley of the Warche or on a ramble along the water’s edge around the lake. Nature, health and sensory experience are the main focus of the “Herba Sana Garten” in Elsenborn with some 200 medicinal herbs and 80 species of wild plant. Those interested in history will find a lot of interesting facts and figures on the legendary encampment of Elsenborn in the nearby Truschbaum Museum.
While families in particular have great fun travelling through the idyllic High Fens by draisine on the former Vennbahn railway line, food connoisseurs will find themselves in the best of hands on the Gourmet Tour from Bütgenbach to Nidrum and back. Five restaurants situated along the hiking trail through the beautiful Warche valley indulge the palates of the participants with delectable East Belgian cuisine.
